Benefit Barbecue and Raffle for Relief

Wayne Homes gathers friends and neighbors to help tornado victims.

It was like a ray of sunshine after the storm. Within a few weeks of the June 6 tornado that ravaged northwest Ohio, the employees of Wayne Homes had raised over $2,000 to help the victims.

The fund-raising began as an initiative within the company, with the home office of Wayne Homes raising more than $1,000. But our Bowling Green office, which was closest to the tornado, quickly expanded the neighborliness into a community-wide effort. On July 9, Sales Manager Tom Sear, Construction Manager Jeanie Thomas and the rest of the Bowling Green staff hosted the “Raffle for Relief.” They had the barbecues fired up, the bouncing castle and balloons fully inflated, and the prizes piled up by the dozen.

Companies who donated prizes and/or money included: 84 Lumber, AE Electric, Ballriechs Potato Chips, Costco, Dible Plumbing, Dietsch's Ice Cream, Easy Street Café, Fiddlestix, Giant Eagle, Gordon Lumber, Hazelton Salon, Kelly's Chevrolet, Maggie Moos, McDonalds, Mr. Spots, Nellie Bagels, Northwest Masonry, Qdoba, Starbucks and Walmart.

All those prizes resulted in a lot of winners. “We had so many prizes, it seemed as if almost everybody who came out won something,” Sear says. “Some people had two or three prizes.”

But in the end, it was the people of northwest Ohio who won. The money that was raised by Wayne Homes is going to a scholarship fund and to the Red Cross to benefit the victims of the tornado.
