Fresh Design Trends for 2019

A new year brings new inspiration for your home and life. The Wayne Homes Design Team and the experts at Mandil, Inc. have put together the freshest new design trends for 2019, so you can update your home and stay ahead of the curve in every area of home design.

Add Character with Fixtures

Light fixtures play a large role in adding character to a room. “I love classic styles with a modern edge. Antique brass has made a huge comeback and the redux version is so much nicer than the shiny 80s version we remember,” says Jennifer Pruett, Senior Interior Designer and Project Manager at Mandil, Inc. The team at Mandil says that the general direction in lighting is turning away from the “industrial” trend and towards a softer edge. French bistro lighting is having its day, with warm globes replacing naked Edison bulbs. Try this trend in a casual dining space, or over your kitchen island.

Furnishing Style

Boho style reigns supreme in furniture right now, but as Pruett reminds us, it’s important to have key pieces that stand the test of time. “Good design is never out of style when it comes to furniture. It should stand the test of time, though it’s always okay to mix in a few on-trend pieces here and there for fun.” She suggests adding a wild floral-print chair or a bright orange end table–things that can be switched out as time goes by.

Accents That Tell a Story

Once you have a foundation of classic, well-made furniture pieces, you can take your home’s style a step further with accents. “It’s the small things that make a house a home. The details should speak to who you are. Finding collected items from travel, or anything that has personal meaning, is what will make a home feel special,” Pruett adds. She has seen a trend towards more personalization and customization, in an effort to really create a curated space, rather than buy a whole room from a magazine. Mix, match and make it your own.

A Fresh Palette

Freshen up your home by getting rid of gray or beige walls and paint them a brightening warm white. “Light walls can create a gallery backdrop for more daring options when it comes to fabric, wall coverings and finishes,” says Pruett. Another trend is on the opposite end of the spectrum–going bold with nontraditional colors. Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year is “Living Coral”, a bright coral shade with golden undertones. This could be used in a powder room or dining room. Other bold shades that are making headlines are deep, inky blues, rich peacock greens and spicy clay tones. These moody colors bring depth and character to walls, furniture and accents alike.
