Mudroom Trends

Mudrooms are often mom’s favorite room in the house because they efficiently organize all of the family’s stuff. From hats to boots, mudrooms are meant to hide away things you don’t want to see and some even create a functional space to enjoy one of the more mundane household chores: laundry. The newest mudrooms are fresh, fun and so appealing, you may even want to sneak away to wash and fold clothes.

Where Should Your Mudroom Go?

Most Wayne Homes floor plans place the mudroom/owner’s entry right off the garage. This is meant to be a “drop zone” for keys, mail, shoes, coats, etc. That way, you can keep your more unsightly items off kitchen countertops and in their very own spots. And, you can have the kids take off their muddy or wet shoes before they even set foot in the rest of the home.

Hardworking Accessories Offer Style and Substance

Most mudrooms have shelves for storage and a bench for sitting to take off your shoes. But, today’s mudrooms are going above and beyond what’s standard, creating a mudroom that is as beautiful as it is functional. Try adding a row of hooks above your bench for hats and coats, and recessed cubbies or cabinets underneath your bench for shoes and boots to go. Set the space off by adding shiplap or bead board on the wall where the hooks and bench are. Voila! Your own custom hall tree. Choose durable flooring that stands up to dirt and water–luxury vinyl flooring, vinyl flooring or tile flooring are good options. Let your mudroom do double duty by also making it your laundry room. Add a countertop for folding above your washer and dryer, and don’t forget shelves or cabinets for cleaning and ironing needs.

Decor and Lighting

You will spend a surprising amount of time in your mudroom…especially if it also houses your washer and dryer, so make it a cheerful spot. If you are able to have natural light, do it! A window gives you a look out into the world as you fold laundry. If you are unable to have a window, be sure you have ample lighting. Besides recessed lighting, try adding sconces or under cabinet lighting for a warm, cozy feel. Try decor that’s colorful, fresh and easy to clean. Add a few throw pillows to your bench. Choose a durable rug for foot traffic that doesn’t show dirt easily. Don’t forget a welcome mat, hampers, wall organization and a family calendar. Your mudroom may just become your favorite place to be!
