The Great Debate: Craftsman or Farmhouse Style?

Farmhouse or Craftsman? It’s truly a tough choice.

Each of these popular exterior styles is beautiful and unique in their own right. The Farmhouse exterior style, while a classic, has become increasingly popular due to the HGTV show “Fixer Upper.” Also a classic style, the American Craftsman architectural movement spun out of the British Arts and Crafts movement and is focused on simplicity in form, use of local materials, and honesty in construction.

At first glance, these looks might appear to be similar, but there are some pretty distinct differences to consider if you’re choosing one or the other for your home. Let’s dive into this great debate and take a look at the similarities, differences, pros, and cons of each.

Farmhouse

Most often seen with white siding and black accents, here are some of the distinct characteristics of the Farmhouse style:

  • Board and batten vertical siding
  • Simple, gabled roofs
  • Wood-look columns
  • Metal accents like aluminum railings and other metal touches

Craftsman

The most popular colors for this style of home include Tuscan clay and beige hues, browns, grays, greens, and similar colors. The most recognizable exterior feature of Craftsman homes are the tapered columns, but here are other common characteristics of this popular elevation:

  • Horizontal siding as well as shake siding
  • Tapered columns for a classic look
  • Dormers on roof
  • Gable pediments
  • Stone wainscotting for added style

Farmhouse homes have large, beautiful covered porches and gable pediments, just like Craftsman-style homes. While there are some beautiful similarities between these two styles, each has its own unique look and feel to consider. Which do you like best?
