Labor Day Happenings: The Perfect Summer Picnic

Labor Day may signal the end of the summer for many of us, but that doesn’t mean your end of summer picnic has to be an end-of-season downer. Whether you’ve been hosting and enjoying picnics all summer long, or this is your first – and last – picnic of the season, follow these tips for enjoying a summer-ending outdoor event to rival any gathering, indoors or out.

It’s all about location

What’s true when it comes to your home is true when it comes to your Labor Day picnic celebration. Do a bit of research on locations and determine what would be best for your purposes. Is it the green space with the stunning views, perfect for sipping a drink with some family and friends? Or perhaps it’s the park with lots of activities and a playground for the more active-minded group. Keep in mind, you’re likely not the only group planning an outdoor meal, wherever you choose, so be conscientious of others.

Keep it simple

A summertime picnic isn’t the best place to try out your brand new recipe for mushroom risotto or chicken cordon bleu. Keep your menu simple, with staple favorites like potato salad, watermelon slices, raw fruits and veggies, burgers and hot dogs. Take a look at this great Pinterest board for some inspiration. When in doubt, keep your list of menu items short – it’s better to do a few things wonderfully than to attempt a three course meal and overwhelm yourself and your guests. Or, organize a potluck-style gathering, and ask attendees to confirm what items they’ll bring along to take some of the burden off your own shoulders.

Don’t break the bank

Don’t feel pressured to acquire a whole mess of items to bring along with you – keep things simple with classic, plain but sturdy paper plates, silverware, cups and napkins, or consider asking attendees to bring a particular item.

Bring the fun with you

The whole point of having a picnic is to enjoy the outdoors with your friends and family. Keep the fun going all afternoon with simple outdoor games like Frisbee, corn hole, kickball or softball. You don’t need much, and as mentioned before, chances are your friends and family will have everything you need. And getting together with family and friends is the best way to top off the summer! Enjoy!

Follow these simple tips for a successful outdoor party and finish off the season with a bang! If you dream of hosting your next picnic in the comfort of your own backyard, beside your custom home, contact us to talk about getting started.
