Dig Day is a milestone many homeowners remember fondly as the moment everything starts to feel “real”. After months of planning and preparation, breaking ground means your new home is officially taking shape. Just like every other step of your journey with Wayne Homes, you’ve got a dedicated team behind you as you move through construction and get closer to home. During this phase, your Field Manager will be your go-to resource, keeping you informed on progress and what to expect along the way.

Meet Your Field Manager

Your Wayne Homes Field Manager is your dedicated partner throughout the construction of your new home, helping make the building process as smooth, organized, and enjoyable as possible. From the start of construction through the final walkthrough, your Field Manager oversees the work happening on your home, coordinates with skilled trades and contractors, monitors quality and progress, and keeps you informed along the way. They are your go-to resource for questions about what’s happening on the job site and help ensure your home is being built according to the plans and Wayne Homes’ quality standards. No question is too big or small! You’ll find yourself talking to your Field Manager almost as much as your family, and the best part? By the end of this process, you’ll feel like family, and that’s just how we like it.

Staying Connected

Your dream home is a big deal, and we want you to enjoy the journey along the way! The Wayne Homes app keeps you connected to your homebuilding team and your home’s progress, all in one convenient place. You’ll be able to communicate with your team, receive important updates, and follow along as your home goes from plans on paper to the place you’ll soon call home. For example, on Dig Day, you’ll see photos and updates from the job site, so you can celebrate that exciting first step with us whether you can be there in person or not! As construction moves forward, you’ll check the app regularly for messages, progress updates, photos, and important information. It’s your easy button for staying informed, asking questions, and being part of the excitement from Dig Day, to the foundation, and all the way to move-in day.

What Else Happens During Excavation?

Excavation is one of the first big steps in turning your plans into a home you can see and walk through. Once the foundation area is excavated, gravel is added as an important part of the foundation process, providing a stable base and helping with drainage. Your Wayne Homes package includes a specified amount of gravel needed for the construction, while additional gravel or site materials requested beyond what’s included can be discussed during planning. As excavation progresses, your site may also require bringing in dirt or hauling dirt away, depending on the existing grade and the amount of soil removed from the site. Once the foundation is in place, the area around it is backfilled with the appropriate soil to complete the grading around your home. Waterproofing is another important part of this stage, helping protect your foundation from moisture and water intrusion. Together, these steps prepare your homesite for the next exciting phase of construction and help create a solid foundation for everything that comes next.

Block Vs. Poured Foundation

So, what comes next after Dig Day? You guessed it: your foundation! At Wayne Homes, we build foundations to fit the needs of your home and the area where you’re building. Depending on your location, your home may have a poured concrete or block foundation—and both are continuous concrete structures designed to provide a strong foundation for your home. For many of our homeowners, block is the foundation method they’ll see most often. Block walls are constructed by skilled masons, with individual blocks designed to meet building codes and specifications and easily accommodate openings, grade changes, and other elements of your home’s plans. Block also offers practical benefits, including greater insulation value, a warmer feel in the winter, and the ability to repair or replace individual blocks if needed. When a poured foundation is used, homeowners can appreciate the value of the elements included in the foundation system and the strength of a continuous concrete wall. Ultimately, the right foundation comes down to your building location and the construction requirements for your home. You can rest assured, whichever method is used, your Wayne Homes team will guide you through what to expect as your home takes shape.

Your Construction Team

Once you are past the excavation and foundation stages, you will see various specialists come in and work on areas of your home. Once your foundation is in place, things really start to get exciting! You’ll begin to see a steady stream of skilled trades on your property, each playing an important role in bringing your home to life. Your framing crew will build the structure and give you your first real look at the shape and layout of your home. Then, plumbers and electricians will install the systems behind the walls, followed by insulation and drywall, which start turning the construction site into actual rooms. As your home moves into the finishing stages, you’ll see flooring installers, cabinet and kitchen installers, trim carpenters, painters, and other finish trades adding the details that make your house feel like home. Each trade builds on the work completed before them, and your Wayne Homes team coordinates the process to keep everything moving forward.
