Wayne Homes Honors Friend at Relay for Life Fundraising Event
At Wayne Homes, every home we build is based on 40 years of tradition. But some of our company traditions have nothing to do with building homes. Sometimes it’s about honoring the special people we have met along the way. People like Joann McClaskey (pictured above, right), a friend that we were proud to have as part of the Wayne Homes family for 20 years before she lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2011.
Each year, we carry on a tradition that Joann started by participating in the Relay for Life, an overnight community walk to raise money for cancer research. It’s a celebration of the lives of people like Joann where we gather to walk, laugh, and have fun while raising awareness in the fight against cancer.
Joann participated as team captain for many years for the event, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. This year the Wayne Homes team turned out on June 14th to walk all night and give out stickers and temporary tattoos in exchange for donations.
The team, dubbed the “AverageWayneHomesJo’s” (a name voted on and chosen by Wayne Homes employees), raised more than $1,400 during the overnight event.
The team even won “Best Campsite Decorations” for their colorful campsite that included purple feather boas, paper lanterns, white lights, and a purple table with fringe.
Thank you to all of our Wayne Homes team members who took turns walking all night, and especially to Brian who walked for 12 hours straight from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (Great job Brian!)
In total, 21 teams and 165 people participated in the event that raised more than $27,000 for cancer research.
