Kitchen Cabinet Height
The most common ceiling height is 8′ tall which is the Included Feature ceiling height for Wayne Homes. However, many customers choose to change their first-floor ceiling height to 9′ tall, and if the floor plan allows for it, some choose to add a cathedral ceiling to their main living space. You may not have considered this before, but ceiling height can make a big difference both in how your kitchen looks and how it functions. Here are some things to consider when choosing cabinet heights:
- How much open space do you want between top-of-wall cabinets and the ceiling?
- Do you want cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling?
- Do you want to add crown molding to the tops of the wall cabinets? If so, you’ll need to consider the ceiling height of the home and the height of the wall cabinets to determine if there is space to do so.
Wall cabinet heights
Wayne Homes includes 30″ tall wall cabinets for the kitchens in our homes. With 30″ wall cabinets and 8′ ceilings, this would leave approximately 12″ from the top of the wall cabinets to the ceiling. Here are some examples of what the 30″ tall wall cabinets (with and without crown molding added to the top of the wall cabinets) look like with various ceiling heights:
- 30″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings
- 30″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings and a cathedral ceiling
- 30″ wall cabinets (with crown molding added to the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings
- 30″ wall cabinets (with crown molding added to the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings and a cathedral ceiling
- 30″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings
- 30″ wall cabinets (with crown molding added to the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings
Other wall cabinet sizes are 36″ and 42″ tall. With 36″ wall cabinets and 8′ ceilings, this would leave approximately 6″ from the top of the wall cabinets to the ceiling. With 42″ wall cabinets, they would extend all the way to 8′ ceilings. With 9′ ceilings, this would leave approx 12″ from the top of the wall cabinets to the ceiling.
Here are some examples of what 36″ and 42″ wall cabinets look like with various ceiling heights:
- 36″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings
- 36″ wall cabinets (with crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 8′ ceilings
- 36″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings
- 36″ wall cabinets (with crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings
- 36″ wall cabinets (with crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings and a cathedral ceiling
- 42″ wall cabinets (no crown molding at the top of wall cabinets) with 9′ ceilings
Do you like the look of different wall cabinet heights in your kitchen? Well, you’re in luck! You can stagger or stack heights with your cabinets for a varied look.
Here are some examples of what staggered/stacked height cabinets look like:
- 30″ and 36″ tall wall cabinets with approx 3″ tall crown molding above (with 9′ ceiling and a cathedral ceiling)
- 36″ and 42″ tall wall cabinets with approx 5″ tall built-up crown molding above (with 9′ ceilings)
- 36″ and 42″ tall wall cabinets with approx 3″ tall crown molding above – corner cabinet shows glass with square mullion grids (with 9′ ceilings)

Kitchen Cabinet Molding Types
Crown molding adds a beautiful, elegant look to your cabinets. There are different widths and styles of molding to create different looks. Here are some examples of what you can do with crown molding for your Wayne Homes kitchen cabinets:
- The most common type of crown molding our customers add is approximately 3″ tall, shown here at top of wall cabinets.
- You can use built-up crown molding, which combines crown molding with other trim pieces to create a taller and more decorative crown molding option for the top of wall cabinets.
- This shaker-style, built-up crown molding is approximately 6″ tall above 42″ wall cabinets with 9′ ceilings.
Kitchen Cabinet Colors
The color of your Wayne Homes kitchen cabinets is a great way to express yourself and add a personal touch to your kitchen. While fresh, white cabinets are a perennial favorite, as are traditional wood cabinets, there is also a range of paint colors that can add a pop of color to your home. Try a contrasting color combination, like a dark color on the base cabinets and a light color on top. Here are some examples of Wayne Homes kitchen cabinet colors you’ll love:
