Relocation Tips from Wayne Homes
Planning on Moving Soon? Start Here.
Relocating to a new city doesn’t have to be daunting with our helpful tips. Wayne Homes has lots of experience working with out of town buyers to build the home of their dreams in their new location. Here are our top tips for making the relocation process as easy and stress-free as possible.
Create a Moving Budget
We know the cost of relocating can feel daunting, so it’s smart to start a spreadsheet or use a moving calculator to formulate a budget. This can help you stay on track when expenses start to stack up. Start with the obvious expenses: moving company, transportation, any temporary housing, storage, etc., then add in the smaller details as you go.
Choose a Moving Company
This is a big deal! Read reviews, ask your Realtor, get to know some companies from community boards such as Nextdoor or local Facebook groups. The last thing you want to do is leave it to chance. After you’ve narrowed it down to three companies, get quotes. While many will tell you it’s best not to go with the cheapest, the most important thing is to find a moving company that is licensed and insured, provides the level of service you expect, and is pleasant to work with for your relocation.
Organize Your Paperwork
The devil is in the details! This is where a relocation can get overwhelming. Start with mail forwarding through USPS.com. Then consider any billing addresses that need to be updated, memberships to cancel or transfer, and updating your car and voting registration.
Here is a list of common items to update:
- Banks
- Credit cards
- Insurance
- Utilities
- Voting registration
- Driver’s license
- Home internet
- Cable
- Pet registration
- Gym membership
Do Your Research
Beyond the actual move itself, we encourage you to research your new city as much as possible before your relocation.
Examples of details to research include:
- Culture & lifestyle
- Explore things like the social and recreational opportunities, the cultural scene, the entertainment choices, and the recreational activities in your new location.
- Schools
- You may want to schedule tours of local schools to see which is your preference.
- Climate
- Since the climates of different regions vary greatly, start by assessing the weather of your new location and how it aligns with your personal preferences.
- Local amenities
- Look at local dining and shopping options to cater to your daily needs and preferences; explore the recreational opportunities (parks, gyms, hiking trails, lakes).
And of course, ask the team at your local Wayne Homes Model Home Sales Center for recommendations! They are neighborhood experts.
One Week Out: Tie Up Loose Ends
Tie up any loose ends before moving to your new home sweet home.
- Utilities should be turned off in your current home one day after your move-out date. All utilities in your new home should be turned on the day before you move in.
- Dispose of all flammable items that can’t be transported, including paint, chemicals, and aerosol cans.
- Take one last look at the items you’re packing. If you have additional items to donate, schedule a pickup by your chosen organization.
- Back up all computers, if packing.
- Get each family member to pack a suitcase like they are going on a two-week vacation with their daily toiletries and comfortable clothes.
- Confirm details with your moving company, including the moving-day arrival time, cell phone numbers, and last-minute details.
- Hire a cleaning company to do a quick clean after the movers leave or schedule a day that you will come back to clean before the new owners arrive.
- Most importantly, celebrate the memories you’ve made in your home and get ready to start a new chapter in your life.
