Hit a Homerun with a Sports-Themed Bedroom
It isn’t just adults who get excited about moving into a brand new custom home. The kids are a huge part of the process, especially when it comes to picking out and designing their bedrooms. They may not jump up and down over bathroom light fixtures and kitchen drawer pulls, but start talking bedroom paint, art and bedding and you may find you have your own mini interior designer on your hands!
We’re thrilled to introduce the first post in our new Design Tips Series, and today we’re starting off with the boy’s bedroom. Make the little man in your life feel like he’s on top of the world with a sports-themed bedroom. It’s not as difficult as you might think to create a boy’s bedroom your son will never want to leave. Let’s review how to get started and some ideas for inspiration.
First, ask!
You may think you know, but do your homework and talk to your son about the teams or sports he cares about most. Maybe he plays one sport but wants to try another, or maybe he roots for his dad’s team but secretly follows another. Just to be safe, talk to your son about what he likes and doesn’t like, so there’s no miscommunication.
Start simple with paint and borders
A simple but effective way to theme a bedroom is to choose your child’s favorite sports team and paint the walls according to the team’s colors. You can do stripes, full walls, or even some self-adhesive team pennant strips.
Sports-themed decorations
Pillows and bedding make up a huge portion of the design of a room, so strike the right tone with sports-themed bedding and pillows designed to represent your child’s favorite sport, whether that’s football, hockey, baseball, basketball or otherwise.
Dream big
If your child has one sports hero he looks up to like no other, consider ordering a life-sized wall decal. If not, you can order non-specific silhouettes that represent your little man’s favorite sports players. This is a relatively inexpensive but highly effective way to theme the room.
Highlight achievements
Don’t stop at your son’s favorite team or sport: use one portion of your child’s space to draw attention to his achievements and encourage him to pursue his passions. It could be as simple as a “Wall of Fame” to hang medals, or as intricate as a trophy case.
Many of Waynes Homes’ model homes have sports-themed bedrooms, so you can really envision what your own space might look like. Find a location near you today and get inspired, and don’t forget to check out our Flickr gallery of boy bedrooms, many of which are sports-themed.
