Home Organizing Tips from The Grit Method
It’s almost back to school time, and that means it’s time to get organized. School schedules and routines are coming back, so it’s a great time to start home organizing in preparation for the fall.
We’re partnering with Nettie from The Grit Method to share some of her best tips and suggestions for home organizing.
Located in Central Ohio, Nettie’s goal is to take the weight off your shoulders during major life transitions such as downsizing, liquidating a loved one’s estate, or getting a space in your home organized so it stops creating anxiety in your life.
Nettie even has a Wayne Homes connection!
She actually lived in a Wayne home in Delaware, OH when she was in high school. “My mom was very proud of our home, and I have the best memories there!” Nettie said. She knows that to be proud of your home, it doesn’t just have to be well built, it has to be well organized too.
Here are some of Nettie’s best tips for home organizing:
Closet? Put a Bin In It!
One of Nettie’s best tips is to put a bin in each of your closets. Add a bin or basket in your closet for clothing you no longer want! Doesn’t fit? Toss it in! “Too small” bins aren’t just for kids. Name that bin whatever you want – and watch your closet refine in the best way.
Nettie says: “Decluttering your closet requires regular maintenance. That is why I love adding a permanent basket or bin labeled ‘donate’ to place clothing you no longer want. Doesn’t make you feel confident? Damaged? Toss it in the bin instead of the floor!”
Organize Your Home Based on Your Routine.
Organize your items by how you use them in your daily routines, not always by category. For example, one basket with all your morning smoothie fixings, located right next to the blender.
Nettie says: “Think about your daily routines and then design your space to fit your lifestyle. Make your space work for YOU!”
Enlist Help from Your Kids.
Label everything with pictures, so even your youngest kids can help when it comes time to tidy up the playroom!
Nettie says: “Labels help keep playrooms organized by designating a specific home for every single toy, making it easier to find and put away items. Children (and adults!) will learn to clean up after themselves more easily when they know exactly where everything belongs, giving them confidence through a sense of achievement and autonomy.”
Declutter for Improved Mental Health.
Make space for what you love, and your home will love you back. Clutter affects your mental health and raises your cortisol levels. What you see is what your mind receives, so tidy up for better mental health!
Nettie says: “Your environment affects your mental health. Clutter is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and stress, especially in women. What your eyes see is what your mind gets.”
Keep It Simple.
Everything we have is a thing we are responsible for. Before Nettie buys something, she asks herself, “Is this something I want to take care of?” You’ll find that many times the answer is no because you don’t want to add one single additional item to your to do list.
Nettie says: “Decluttering your home also means stopping the clutter at the source. Before I buy anything, I think ‘Do I want the responsibility of taking care of this item?’ Everything we own is something we have to take care of.”
Make Space for What You Love.
Decluttering makes space for the things you care about the most. It makes life easier, and your space is truly a reflection of you.
Nettie says: “I’ve had clients tell me they have missed out on life experiences because they are too overwhelmed by their own home. They’ve been too embarrassed to have family over for dinner or don’t let their kids’ friends over because of the clutter. Life is short. Don’t let your stuff get in the way of the best stuff.”
Throughout the month of August, Wayne Homes has partnered with The Grit Method to do a giveaway for Nettie’s organizational services.

In the meantime, why not try the 5-Step Method?
As detailed by NPR, you can tackle a messy home by targeting the 5 sources of mess: trash, dishes, laundry, things that have a place, and things that don’t have a place. Once you tackle the first 4, the last one is the hardest–things that don’t have a place. These things can either be sorted with similar items, put in a bin for later, donated, or thrown away. Try it and see the changes in your home.
