Quarantine Gardening 101

Inset-Gardening-Quarantine-GIFBeing stuck at home during quarantine has put a spotlight on home and garden to-do items that you want to tackle. If you’re like the rest of the country, you’ve been ordering mulch, getting on your gardening gloves and making some backyard magic happen.

If you’ve had “grow something” on your to-do list for a while, there’s no better time to start a garden.

Whether it’s for esthetics or for function, growing a garden is a beautiful way to add color and vibrancy to your property. Flowering gardens offer a variety of colors that can change as seasons change. Growing your own food gives you a sense of freedom and sustainability, which is especially nice given the recent food scarcity issues many grocery stores experienced. Food grown in your yard is convenient and let’s face it…homegrown produce just tastes better!

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Make your dirt deluxe. If possible, do a soil test to see what you’re working with. Regardless of the results, use compost or manure to add organic matter that will enrich your soil for better growth.
  • Choose your container. What are you planting in? Garden beds? A planter? Planters are made for thrillers, spillers and fillers (see below). Garden beds may be better suited for perennials, depending on how easy or hard it is to dig in your beds. Raised beds are ideal for vegetable gardens.
  • Thrillers, spillers and fillers. For a flowering garden, choose from three different types of plants: Thrillers, spillers and fillers. Thrillers are named as such because of their height and dramatic presence. Ornamental grasses are an example of a thriller. Spillers drape over the container they are in, such as petunias or creeping Jenny. Fillers simply fill up the space in a beautiful way.
  • Consider where you live. Water and sun play a huge role in what will grow well. Regardless of your climate, if it’s you who can’t remember to water the garden, then it’s best to choose hardy drought-tolerant annuals, perennials and succulents.
  • Diversify with herbs or veggies. Herbs and veggies can be beautiful, too! Certain lettuces can bring gorgeous color and texture to your garden. Flowering herbs, such as chamomile and lavender, grow quickly and are great to dry and use in recipes. Just watch out for pesky critters who might be after your homegrown produce. Create a rabbit fence to keep out unwanted admirers.
