Warm Up to These Fireplace Ideas

A big trend in interior design is creating cozy spaces in true hygge (pronounced hue-ga) style. Hygge is the Danish practice of creating a mood of coziness and comfortable contentment. Think chunky knit throw blankets, hot cocoa, and a blazing fire. With the popularity of the hygge movement, there has been a renewed focus on fireplaces.

Placement

Many homeowners put their fireplace in the great room, typically on the rear wall flanked by windows or on the interior wall. But, your fireplace doesn’t have to live there. It can be in your master suite, to make it extra cozy, or some homeowners like having a fireplace in their den/family room. Wherever you’d like to turn up the coziness, consider adding a fireplace. It adds value and warmth to any room.

Material

While stone and brick are traditional choices for fireplace designs, shiplap, wood treatments, and granite are all popular options that can transform the mood of a room. Shiplap and rustic wood deliver a farmhouse vibe, while granite is more transitional. Having a different mantel from the rest of the fireplace surround adds visual interest. Many homeowners are adding a barn beam mantel to a white wood or brick fireplace, giving it an aged, cultivated appearance.

Style

Consider your style before you settle on a fireplace. If your home has a contemporary feel, a sleek rectangular fireplace is the perfect complement. Or, try an indoor/outdoor fireplace that has one side in the living space, and the other side on your patio for fireside conversations. Brick and stone will always belong in a more traditional space. Whether you are going for a classic or rustic look, both of these durable materials reflect enduring style. The modern farmhouse look continues to be on trend coast to coast, and white shiplap and barn accents are a fresh approach to your farmhouse-style fireplace.

Size

If you have soaring ceilings, a two-story-high fireplace is a real show stopper. Pair this look with large windows and light paint for maximum “wow” factor. If that’s a little much for you, consider a ceiling-high fireplace with room for a mounted TV or artwork. Or, take the more traditional route of a standard 4′ 8″ or slightly taller 6’8″ fireplace surround. Again, considering the style and tone of your home will help dictate which fireplace size is right for you.
