Employees of custom home builder Wayne Homes recently participated in Project Homeless Connect, a one-day event designed to offer assistance to people that are currently homeless or facing homelessness.

UNIONTOWN, OH – On August 25th, employees of Ohio-based custom home builder Wayne Homes recently participated in Project Homeless Connect, a one-day event to benefit families in need in Stark County. The event was created to offer assistance to families who are at risk of becoming homeless, are currently homeless, or have recently transitioned into housing after being homeless.

The event was a combined effort between the city of Canton, OH and private organizations to provide a comprehensive list of services and resources for families and individuals in need. Individuals met one-on-one with volunteers to discuss their situation and current needs. Over 350 men, women, and children received assistance during the event.

Employees of Wayne Homes volunteered during work hours as part of the company’s Random Acts of Kindness program. Through the Random Acts of Kindness program employees are encouraged to contribute to the community where they live and work.

“Being able to participate in Project Homeless Connect was a real eye opener to what is going on in our community, Executive Assistant, Kim Hamrick said. “I enjoyed being able to provide information as well as listen and encourage others that it is okay to ask for help when it is needed. Sometimes, what I can offer others that are in need is free, a smile.”

The organizations that participated in the event provided resources for housing information, healthcare, employment services, legal assistance, food benefits, and additional services. Kits filled with essential items, such as shampoos, soaps, and toothbrushes were given to each person who attended. Upon leaving, lunch was also distributed.

Human Resource Coordinator Kelly Sumey, said, “While I have participated in other RAK days, this was my first experience with Project Homeless Connect. It was definitely a humbling experience and I left feeling grateful, both for the things I have in life and for being able to help the people I could.”

A total of 15 Wayne Homes employees volunteered during the event, including Tracy Gershom, Laurie Kyser, Cheryl Chamberlin, Kathy Pierson, Mike Sanders, Mike Leckie-Ewing, Kelly Sumey, Brittany Burkhart, Kerrie Murray, Sherry Schaadt, Megan Moncrief, Michele Roshong, Ben Vogel, Rachel Jervis, Keith Drollinger, Jason Fortune, Kim Hamrick, Chelsea Coughlan, Aleisha Stout, and Josh Leach.

“Project Homeless Connect really put things into perspective. There are a lot of people in need that are much less fortunate than me. It taught me to appreciate everything I have,” said Keith Drollinger, Vice President of Construction Services.
