Start the School Year Right

September is here, and for millions of families, that means kids are back to school. As students pack their bags, grab their lunches and hurry off to start their year, countless teachers are preparing for their arrival.

Teacher Appreciation Week comes every spring, and it’s always nice to say “thanks” to your child’s teacher at the end of the school year, but what about starting the year off on the right foot by showing your child’s teacher your appreciation for the work they do?

No need to go overboard – these simple ideas don’t take much time, but the thought is sure to be appreciated nonetheless.

Survival kit

Put together a small basket of “survival kit” items, such as a coffee mug, some extra pens and pencils, post-it notes and other small but useful classroom items. You could even take the items, tie them together with a ribbon and put them in the coffee mug itself.

Stress relief kit

Being a teacher is no easy task. Show your child’s teacher you understand the stresses of being a teacher by giving them a small stress relief kit. Use the mug idea from the survival kit idea, but inside it put a candle and some tea or candies.

Handwritten note

Nothing says appreciation like taking the time to write a heartfelt, handwritten thank you note. Don’t overthink it – just tell them you appreciate their work and are looking forward to a great school year.

Home baked goodies

If a handwritten note shows serious appreciation, some homemade cookies or brownies is a notch above. Pick your favorite, most loved recipe and bake up a hearty batch, then package them for safe transport in your child’s knapsack.

Any one of these ideas – any maybe even a combination of them – would go a long way in showing your child’s teacher you recognize and are grateful for the work they do every day, and will start the school year off on a happy note.
