The 31st annual Akron Chili Open Golf Classic, presented by Wayne Homes, raised more than $312,000 for the Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs.
Uniontown, OH – The 31st annual Akron Chili Open Golf Classic, presented by Wayne Homes, was hosted virtually on Saturday, February 6 and raised over $312,000 for the Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs in Akron, Ohio.
The Chili Open is an annual event that raises funds to send children and adults with developmental disabilities to summer camp and aid operational costs of the camp. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually this year.
“This was the first time in 31 years that we didn’t come together in February to celebrate our success and campers,” Dan Reynolds, Director of the Rotary Camp, said. “While we were not at Hale Farm this year in person, we still came together virtually to celebrate and support our community’s most vulnerable youth and their families. I continue to be humbled and thankful that our community demonstrates so much support for our camp and our campers.”
While going virtual did pose its challenges, the event still allowed supporters to participate in the annual raffle ticket drawings and online silent auction. Social media also played a large role in the virtual event with the Show Us Your Chili Face contest the week leading up to the event.
In addition to Wayne Homes’ title sponsorship funds and additional donations, Wayne Homes raised over $7,400 just in raffle tickets sales to support the event.
“[The Chili Open] is a good fit for who we are and some of the local charities we want to support,” George Murphy, President and CEO of Wayne Homes, said. “It’s always been very important to us, but at times like these, it’s where it becomes even more critical. I can only anticipate next year the needs for the camp will be even more pressing than they were in the past.”
