FAQs: The Design Studio Experience

One area of the home building process that many of our homeowners are excited for is the design phase. Many often find, however, that once they get into this phase, there are far more decisions to be made than one might expect, and it can start to get a bit overwhelming!

You don’t have to be a custom home designer to build your own home, though; that’s what the experts are for. We have several design experts on our team who help homeowners walk through the design process, handpicking their chosen features and creating something uniquely theirs.

We talked to Design Consultant Jeanetta Dye, who works in our Newark office, about some of the common questions families face during the design phase, and how she helps them work through it to create a stunning home.

In a few words, describe the importance of the color meeting process.

The color meeting is where dreams begin taking shape and becoming a reality.

What are some of the ways you help people think through all the decisions that have to be made?

I typically start the color process with a statement like “we are going to have fun today! Tell me about your family and your dreams so I can capture of your vision.” After that I always ask them what their most excited about, and most importantly, how they’re feeling. Then I use those three questions and statements as a springboard for the rest of the meeting. Then, I typically work with the color selection guide page to page and take it step-by-step from that point.

I practice active listening through the entire meeting. With active listening, I can better connect with each customer. Once I discover a glimpse of the homeowners personality and needs, I am able to help each person be more decisive.

If you’re thinking about building a home, what are some of the most important things to consider?

Structure, foundation, and design are all equally important. Each of these three are essential to loving one’s home.

What do you find most rewarding about helping to create a customer’s home?

I love being apart of something as big as someone’s dream. It is an amazing feeling and an honor to work on something as important as one’s home. I still have the wow factor every day when I come to work.

What are some frequently asked questions you get and how do you answer them?

I am constantly asked, “how do you have so much patience?” My reply is, “This is your home, your dream, I have nothing but time. Patience is easy when dreams are becoming a reality!”
